Verita Driskell Obituary

Verita Leigh Driskell (Vickers), age 65, passed away on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at Ascension Miramar Beach Hospital.

Verita was born on March 29, 1960, in Decatur, Alabama, to Dallas Neal Vickers Sr. and Mary Alice Vickers (Morris). She was raised in Decatur, where she later married the love of her life, Charles Edmond Driskell, on May 28, 1983.

Verita earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was intelligent, thoughtful, and quietly determined. She enjoyed reading and doing puzzles, finding comfort and joy in learning and problem-solving. Earlier in life, she loved walking on the beach, a pastime she cherished until it became too physically painful.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Charles Edmond Driskell; her sons, Christopher Lee Driskell and his wife Elizabeth Ruth Driskell (Lovell), and Steven Edmond Driskell; her beloved granddaughter, Elyta Rose Driskell; her sisters, Debra Celeste York (Vickers) and Mary Jane Capron (Vickers); and her rescue cat, Ava.

A private family-only ceremony will be held on December 19, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at Davis Watkins Funeral Home, Miramar Beach location. There will be no visitation. Cremation will follow. In accordance with Verita’s wishes and those of her spouse, their cremated remains will be mixed together after her husband’s passing.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that donations be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation in Verita’s memory.

Thank you to the entire staff of Ascension Miramar Beach ER and Hospital. Too many names to name everyone but everyone in every department was very friendly, efficient, professional and caring. Even people not on regular nursing duty helped out with things like moving her in bed or cleaning away food and drinks. Dr. McCaskill was her in-hospital physician most of her stay there and gave answers to every question we asked and suggested alternatives. She coordinated with her oncologist Dr. Thomas Johnson for treatment and got us meetings with Meghan Williams of Gentiva Hospice. Meghan was very responsive/efficient and coordinated most of the activities enabling us to spend more quality time with Verita. She was genuinely caring and comforting. She got us a small Christmas tree for her room before I even got back from signing hospice papers. That was such a lift to my/our spirits. As a result of treatment by hospice and staff, her passing was extremely peaceful and pain free. Chaplain Joseph gave much wanted spiritual help before and after she passed along with hope and certainty of her new life with God. Verita said numerous times she was not afraid to die but was afraid of the pain. The cancer returned very fast and aggressively and she was in constant pain for the last three weeks. A spiritual and caring woman, we have no doubt she is in the arms of God now and watching over us until we see her again.

Verita will be remembered for her quiet strength, devotion to her family, and the gentle ways she found peace in the simple moments of life.
