Roberta Mitchell Obituary

Roberta A. Mitchell was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She passed away peacefully on January 15, 2024, at the age of 78, in Shalimar, Florida surrounded by family.

She was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, on December 28,1945 to George A. Hayes and Norma R. (Halford) Hayes.

Roberta married James U. Mitchell, Jr. on August 1,1966 at Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Alabama. Over the next twenty-seven years of Air Force service, they moved all around the United States, always making a new assignment a fun and loving home for their children. After retirement, Roberta and James made their permanent home in San Antonio, Texas, where they were surrounded by great friends and neighbors.

Mom loved being a military spouse and over the years was actively involved in the Officer’s Wives Club, squadron wives groups, bowling and playing bridge. She loved cooking and hosting dinner parties. Roberta also loved dogs.

She is survived by daughter, Dawn Michelle Beamer and her husband, Brent of Durham, North Carolina; daughter, Heather L. Kapp and her husband, Chris of Shalimar, Florida as well as granddaughters, Kelly B. Kapp and Sara M. Kapp, both of Shalimar, Florida. Roberta is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth A. Jones of Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Roberta was preceded in death by her husband, James U. Mitchell, Jr. originally from Charleston, South Carolina; father and mother, George and Norma (Halford) Hayes of Calvert City, Kentucky; and in-laws, James and Katherine (Duc) Mitchell of Charleston, South Carolina.

There will be no visitation or memorial, as was her wish. Roberta will be interred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, alongside her husband. We know she has been re-united with Dad, family members and many friends who have gone before.

For those that wish, donations can be made in Roberta’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the Folds of Honor Foundation.

We would like to express our gratitude to all of Mom’s friends that shared plenty of laughs and love with her. Special thanks to the Emerald Coast Hospice Care team, who took care of Mom in her final days with such grace and respect.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
