Ramona Leger Obituary

Ramona Leger went to be with the lord on, Thursday, February 27, 2025.  Mona, as her family and friends knew her, was born Ramona Louise Duhaime in North Sacramento, California on February 13, 1939.

Her early years growing up were often difficult as her father often moved the family back and forth from California to Connecticut searching for new job opportunities. While she was living in Devon, Connecticut, at the age of 13, she met her future husband, Alfred (Al) Leger. Al had recently joined the Navy and was home on leave when they met. They wrote back and forth during the four years Al was in the Navy and were married in Mariana, Florida on April 27th 1957, shortly after Al was honorably discharged. Soon after getting married, they moved to Hialeah, Florida and started a family of their own. Although they had very little money or means, their love for each other was enough. Their home was a small 18 foot travel trailer where Mona washed clothes by hand in the bathtub and cared for her two children, Janice and Allen. In 1963 Mona and Al bought their first house in North Miami. While living there, Mona gave birth to two more sons, Joseph and Edward. Mona worked very hard every day at raising her four children while accomplishing the many tasks demanded of a successful homemaker.  She made sure the family attended Catholic mass every Sunday and her children attended Sunday school. Anyone who knew Mona, knew how much she loved animals; especially dogs.  Her passion for dogs led to her establishing her own AKC registered kennel named, "Regel." At Regel Kennels, Mona and Al bought, sold, breed and showed many Collies over several years. Mona and Al joined the Collie Club of Greater Miami where Al was elected President and Mona elected Secretary. As Secretary, Mona wrote and published the club's monthly newsletter. Mona also had a passion for Greyhound dog racing. For many years she was a familiar face at all three Greyhound tracks in Miami and Hollywood. Mona was a devoted wife and mother. She always had time for her kids and grand-kids and often lent encouragement and advice. Mona and Al were married 53 years before Al's passing in 2010. Mona leaves behind four children, Janice Parton and Allen, Joseph and Edward Leger, seven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, seven nieces and five nephews, and many close friends. Her second family was all the wonderful staff members who provided her outstanding care at Crestview Rehabilitation Center in Crestview, Florida.  The medical care as well as emotional support the nurses, CNA’s and other employees provided “Miss Mona” during her three and half years as a resident, is greatly appreciated.  Thank you! Mona will truly be missed by everyone who knew her.
