Michael Patrick Monaghan, a man whose contagious laughter, boundless generosity, and joyful spirit filled the lives of everyone around him, passed away at his home in Fort Walton Beach, FL on July 8, 2026, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by the family he adored.
Born on August 1, 1956, in Orleans, France, to Colonel John T. Monaghan (U.S. Army) and Xenia (Hegyi) Monaghan, Michael lived a life perfectly summarized by his own personal motto: to eat, drink, and be merry.
A World Traveler, Dreamer, and Scholar
Growing up as a proud “Army brat,” Michael’s childhood took him and his siblings all over the world. The family lived in locations spanning from his birthplace in Orleans, France, to Brussels, Belgium, and Leavenworth, Kansas, before eventually putting down roots in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
It was there on the sunny shores of Florida that Michael spent his youth and graduated from Choctawhatchee High School, class of 74. As a French horn player for the Band and Style marchers, his lifelong passion for music began to take root. He spent his high school years hanging out at the beach with friends, looking up at the condos and dreaming of one day owning his own piece of the coast—a dream he proudly realized in the early 2000s when he purchased a condo on Okaloosa Island.
He was a lifelong learner and traveler, furthering his education at the University of West Florida, Florida State University, and Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. A deeply worldly man with a sharp memory and a profound knack for history, Michael would often surprise and delight his family by effortlessly understanding or speaking a touch of French—especially during conversations with his daughter-in-law, Louise—a charming nod to his birthplace.
Service and Career: “Building America”
Before launching into his career, Michael worked as a local radio DJ in his late teens. He then proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from June 1976 to June 1979 as a broadcast journalist (SP4). Stationed at Yongsan Army Base in Seoul, South Korea, he worked with the Armed Forces Korea Network (AFKN). True to his musical roots, he famously convinced his senior leaders to replace the officers' preferred elevator music with a rock-based lineup, much to the delight of the young enlisted troops.
Following his military service, Michael spent his professional life in real estate development. His family lovingly joked that he was one of the men who “built America.” His nationwide development work shaped the footprints of household names like Pizza Hut, Blockbuster, Papa John’s, Quizno’s, D’Angelo’s, and Office Depot. Later in his career, he spearheaded large-scale federal projects for the GSA, including a new FBI Headquarters and Training Facility in the National Capital Region and multiple VA Hospitals.
A Life Set to Music
To know Michael was to know his music. An avid concert-goer with a massive vinyl and CD collection, he was a self-taught pianist who filled his home with beautiful melodies on evenings and weekends.
Some of his most cherished times were jamming over drinks with his close friend, Bob Worley, and playing Christmas piano duets with his daughter, Lindsey—a tradition that grew more special with each passing year. An absolute lover of Pink Floyd, he insisted all throughout his life that he wanted “Wish You Were Here” and “Us and Them” played at his funeral. Those melodies will forever echo in the hearts of those who loved him.
Family and Fondest Memories
Above all, Michael cherished his family. He married the love of his life, Betty Ann (Morgan) Monaghan, on May 1, 1976, in Fort Walton Beach. Together, they built a beautiful life, spending twenty wonderful years raising their family in Damascus, Maryland.
Michael was his happiest when watching his children thrive, whether at his daughter’s piano recitals or taking in “Friday Night Lights” at the packed local stadium to watch his son play for the Swarmin' Hornets. He shared his passion for travel and adventure by taking his family on unforgettable journeys around the world. Among his favorite traditions were trips to New York City to enjoy Broadway shows and visiting Renaissance festivals each fall, creating cherished memories that his family will carry with them forever. In his later years, he found profound peace cruising on his boats with family, friends, and his beloved Golden Doodle, Lucy, enjoying waterfront dining, sunsets, tunes, the wind in his hair, and watching his grandchildren play and dance. He was the life of every Thanksgiving and Christmas, always turning a simple gathering into an unforgettable occasion.
Surviving Family
Michael's legacy of love lives on through his devoted wife of over 50 years, Betty Ann Monaghan; his son, Morgan Taylor Monaghan and daughter-in-law, Louise Amanda; and his daughter, Lindsey Brianne Armstrong and son-in-law, Timothy James. He was a deeply proud grandfather to Cora Reese, Macy Claire, Alyssa Paige, Mina Leslie, and Michael Morgan.
He is also survived by his loving Mother, Xenia Monaghan; siblings: Peggy (Guy) De Voghel, John (Diana) Monaghan, Sheila (Wayne) Baker, and Elizabeth Monaghan Redd. He was preceded in death by his father, Colonel John T. Monaghan, and his brother, Thomas Monaghan.
