Melvin Canoy Obituary

Mr. Melvin (Joe) Canoy, age 74, passed away Monday, February 19, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was born March 10, 1949, in Wardell, Missouri to Edgar and Lillian Canoy. He was a resident of Cottondale, Florida.  Joe was a Christian by faith. He graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Alabama. During his lifetime, Joe was a former Alabama State Trooper, a Marshall of Mount Olive Alabama and a Coroner's Assistant for Jefferson County, Alabama. He was a retired Probation Officer for the State of Florida, as well as an Adjunct Instructor at Panhandle Technical College. He last worked for Waste Pro in Panama City, Florida. 

Joe is proceeded in death by his parents; one sister, Dorothy; and great grandson, Jack.

He is survived by his loving wife of thirteen years, Voncile Canoy; his children, Sherry, Cassidy (Josh), McKenzie, and Theresa (Danny); four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three siblings, Donna (Butch), James (Phyllis), and Thomas (Naomi); and many nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers are Thomas Glidewell, Jamie Glidewell, Jay Bertram, Josh Smith, and Ryan Chilcutt.

A Celebration of Joe's life will be held Friday, February 23, 2024, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Davis Watkins Funeral Home, 1474 highway 83 North, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32433, with Reverend Danny Glidewell officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior. Committal services will follow at Caney Creek Cemetery. 

Flowers will be accepted, or donations can be made to St. Jude’s in his honor.

Arrangements and services are under the direction of Davis-Watkins Funeral Home of DeFuniak Springs.
