John Elvis Brown, age 78, a resident of Freeport, Florida, passed away unexpectedly at his home Tuesday, May 12, 2020. He was born December 10, 1941 in Walton County to Sterling Olin and Mary Ward Brown, one of 12 children. John bravely served his country in the United States Army, pulling one tour in the jungles of Vietnam. He has a memorial block in his honor at Freeport City Hall. He ran a road grader for Walton County for about 10 years and was employed with Young and Sons in Niceville, Florida for 20 plus years before he retired. Watching NASCAR in hopes, Bill Elliott, his favorite driver would cross the finish line first, going fishing and hunting deer were his favorite past times. John was a kind, gentle person who was loved by all.
He is preceded in death by parents; daughter, Vanessa Reed; two grandsons, Brian Cosson and Timothy Brown, Jr.; and nine siblings.
John is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Ruby Brown; two daughters, Teresa Chumney and husband Stuart and Sherry Wall and husband Jon; one son, Timothy Brown and wife Katie; one son/grandson, Travis Sapp; eighteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kenny Stone and Elaine O’Neal; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In keeping with John’s wishes, he will be cremated with a memorial service to be held at a later date.
