Captain Joan Stubbs, USMC

Joan Stubbs went home to Jesus on June 2, 2026. Joan was born on January 17, 1957, in Dayton, Ohio, the daughter of William Thomas Stubbs and Marjorie June Webb Stubbs.

She graduated from Carmel High School in 1975 and received a bachelor’s degree in social work from Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana, in 1979. After working in social services, Joan attended the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Lieutenant of Marines in 1986. Joan was a Marine Corps administrative officer, whose tours of duty included serving as the Adjutant Officer at 2nd and 1st Marine Aircraft Wings, in the G-1 at the Force Service Support Group in Okinawa, Japan. She later volunteered as a White House social aid while serving at 8th and I Barracks, Washington, D.C. Captain Joan Stubbs left active service in 1995. She worked for Baker and Taylor Publishing in Indianapolis, Indiana for many years.

Upon retirement, she headed for the beautiful beaches in Destin, Florida, where she built a wonderful sun-filled life full of grace and wonderful friends. She was active in numerous faith-based ministries and loved the Destin Methodist Beach Services. Joan was an active member of American Legion Post 296, where she enjoyed calling Bingo! She will be remembered by those whose life she touched for her kind heart, sound counsel, and beautiful smile. She knew Jesus. She was a good woman.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her siblings, Trish Rahke (Don), David Stubbs, Rob Stubbs (Marilynn), and Nancy Copeland (Kevin); nine much-loved nieces and nephews; fifteen great nieces and nephews; and two godchildren.
