James Marsh Obituary

James Winfield Marsh, of DeFuniak Springs, Florida, died peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones on January 22, 2024.

He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1938 to Fulton and Mary Marsh. Jim joined the United States Navy in 1956, where he served three years of active service in the NAS Lakehurst Airship Squadron 3. He then served with the Navy Reserves for the following two years. Deciding to serve his country even further, Jim then enlisted in the Army National Guard and served for twelve years.

Jim was passionate about his career, working for twenty-six years at the State of Florida Department of Corrections, where he retired as Captain. He also thoroughly enjoyed his time as a Fire Chief and played a crucial part in the establishment of the fire department at the Union Correctional Institution (UCI).

Jim met the love of his life, Tracey, in 1980 through a close friend that was playing match maker. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married February 20, 1982.

Jim had six children, Jimmy Marsh, Jr. and his wife, Valerie, Richard Marsh and his wife, Charlotte, Kathy Hill and her husband, Truman, Steven Marsh, Bobby Hampton, and Wendy Permenter and her husband, Brad.

More than anything, Jim enjoyed being a grandparent. He had twenty grandkids and nine great grandchildren and had a special relationship with his local grandchildren, Felicia Permenter, Zachary Marsh, Gavin Permenter, Ali Hampton, Caitlyn Permenter, Lyla Permenter and great grandkids, Oliver, Slade, and Luka Permenter. He treasured his time with all of his grandkids and loved being their Pawpaw.

Jim has precious memories with so many people, especially with his long time and close friend, George Cone.

Everyone who knew Jim knew how much he loved the outdoors. If he wasn’t out working on a project in the garage, then he was on a lake somewhere fishing. Something you may not know about Jim was that he enjoyed being able to entertain as Emmett the Clown.

Jim will always be remembered for his infectious laugh and the way he lit up a room. We couldn’t have asked for a better husband, father, grandparent, and friend and we will miss him every day. His memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved him.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Fulton and Mary Marsh; brother, Robert Marsh; sister, Carla Sue Talley (Sissy); father-in-law, Dennis Kinsey; and daughter-in-law, Tina Pickard.
