James Joseph Martin, age 78, of DeFuniak Springs, Florida passed away Friday, December 19, 2025, at his residence. He was born October 19, 1946, in Argyle, Florida. James was a son, brother, father, uncle, friend, and neighbor. He was mostly known for being a hard worker. There was very little he didn’t know about vehicles. His favorite models were the older ones in the 1940-1960’s. He could change out a transmission in the middle of a sand bed. Why, you may ask, because that is where it broke down at. He could find employment easily. He liked learning new things. He was able to wire and plumb his own home, even passing inspection. Next to working hard, he found great joy in helping people. If you knew James, there’s no doubt that he performed a great feat that hindered you from accomplishing your pursuit for the day, week, or even month. He never left you stranded. He was a simple man, who enjoyed the simple things and way of life. He preferred a wood heater and an oscillating fan to the more modern methods for heating and cooling. When it came to the girls, he was a caring man.
James is preceded in death by his parents, Emanuel Martin and Adell Harrison Martin; two daughters, Linda and Liz Martin; four sisters, Rebecca Holmes, Alma Jones, Nina Berrian, and Marie Cauley one brother, Lester Martin; one stepson, Terry Floyd; and one niece, Janice.
He is survived by two daughters, Bobbie and Robbie Martin; one son, Robert Martin; one sister, Easter Wright; two stepchildren, Paul Hurley and Michelle Cawthon Schopinski; seven grandchildren, Eddie, Christian, Gloria, Justin, Ski, Amber, and Austin; eleven nieces and nephews, Anniebelle, Alice, Gerald, James, Robert, Eric, John Paul, Jerry, Ann, Michelle, and Cynthia; along with a host of great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 23, 2025, in the chapel of Davis-Watkins Funeral Home, 1474 State Highway 83 North, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32433 beginning at 5 p.m. with Reverend Eric Bryan officiating. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
