Ella Hunter Obituary

Ella Mae was born November 5, 1933, the first of five children. She grew up in Nortonville, Kansas, then moved to Seattle, Washington with her first husband to raise her family. They had five children together. With her can-do spirit ever present, she married James H. Hunter and had two more children.

She was the bedrock of the entire family. You would find her attending bike races, baseball, softball, soccer, and wrestling matches, supporting her children and keeping them busy to stay out of trouble; she often said, “idle hands are the devil’s playground”. Her support was unwavering of her family. Her home was always open for all to share, and many friends of the family would find a hot meal and some advice; whether sought or not. Everyone knew they were welcome at Kenyon Street in West Seattle.

When she was not chasing her children, Ella Mae was busy with many hobbies; knitting, crocheting, creating pixel art, staining glass, and doll making, as well as collecting dolls, plates, and other keepsakes. She loved to travel and was able to see the world after retiring.

Ella Mae was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the West Seattle Eagles. She lived a full life and fought to give her family the best of everything. Those who had the opportunity to meet and spend time with her are better for it.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Ella and Shorty Uhler; brother, Sonny; husbands, Jerry Griffin and James H. Hunter; and her son, David Wayne Griffin.

Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Mike Griffin, Debi Shoemaker, Tom Griffin, Steve Griffin, James L. Hunter, and Billy Hunter; and grandchildren, Kevin Griffin, Jeff Griffin, Larry Griffin, Brian Powlus, Phillip Powlus, Rachel Hunter Harvey, Rael Kaska,
Gabriela Hunter, David Hunter, Nicole King, Naomi Hunter, and AJ Hunter.
