Donald (Don) Norman Basler, born July 5, 1930, passed away peacefully in his Florida home on July 4, 2026; just a few hours before his 96th birthday.
Don was the son of Norman and Ethel Basler. He grew up with his sister, Diane, in Webster Groves, outside St. Louis, Missouri. He began showing interest in entrepreneurship at age 10 by filling people’s lighters, cutting grass, and giving rides on his pony at birthday parties. Upon graduation from Grinnell College, IA, he married his college sweetheart, Alida Tolman and served four years in the Air Force during the Korean War. Don and Alida moved to Northbrook, IL and raised two children, Susan and Douglas.
Don spent his career with United Conveyor Corporation, where his integrity, intensity to pursue the highest quality products, and ability to fix problems, earned him the role of president, a position he held for thirty years. His continued attention to improvement built a highly respected company throughout the industry.
Don invested his spare time pursuing his passions. These included sailboat racing, camping, backpacking, listening to classical music, and piloting his small plane. He had a huge heart for the welfare of animals and supported several animal shelters.
Don lived a life defined by dedication and loyalty to his family, his job, his passions, and his dogs. He had two rewarding marriages, fifty years with Alida, until her passing, and seventeen years with Izabela. Don and Iza relocated to Destin, FL in 2013.
Don will be remembered for his strong work ethic, honesty, generosity, and a strong presence. He leaves behind a family who will forever treasure the memories they shared and the example he set through a life lived to the full.
He is survived by his wife, Izabela; his daughter, Susan (Craig) Swanson; his son, Doug (MaryJo) Basler; his grandchildren, Lauren and Michael Basler, and Scott and Alita Swanson; his sister, Diane Hootman; and extended family members and friends whose lives were enriched by the privilege of knowing him. Don is preceded in death by his first wife, Alida (Tolman) Basler.
In lieu of flowers, donators may be made in Don’s memory to:
