Craig Kruse, notable Florida developer, passed away February 5, 2023, from complications of liver disease, while surrounded by friends and family. He is publicly known for his real estate acumen and years of development creativity and success, but those who knew him best knew him for his love of travel, life and laughter.
Craig was born on December 31, 1948 in Metairie, Louisiana to Clayton and Elaine Kruse. He had fond childhood memories playing competitive basketball with his brother, Clayton Kruse, Jr., and developing his incredible taste for food, experiences and beautiful things.
While enlisted in the United States Army, Craig discovered his work ethic and desire to succeed. His commanding officer complimented his “bearing, knowledge and positive attitude” and Craig took these attributes into the burgeoning real estate market of Northwest Florida. Arriving in Fort Walton in the early 1970s, Craig developed countless projects across the panhandle that shaped and benefited the area. He arrived a wall paper hanger, and left the premier developer from Pensacola to Panama City Beach. Building a deal was building community for Craig, and along the years he gathered his colleagues into a family of wildly determined, successful and hilarious people. They had many stories to tell, and if you have some more, we’d love to hear them.
Craig was full of energy and life, with a sharp wit and contagious laugh. He had a generous heart that loved hospitality and spontaneity; passionately ranging from concert tickets to cooking lessons in Italy. His passions included art, music, good food, travel, friends and family. He also hated lilies, with a passion. So please, don’t send any.
Craig is survived by his son, Carson Gaffrey-Kruse and step-son, Richard M. Steele, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Elaine Kruse; and brother, Clayton Kruse, Jr.
The Celebration of Craig will be held on Thursday, February 9, 2023 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Craig’s favorite restaurant, The Ocean Club, 8955 US-98 W 107, Miramar Beach, FL 32550.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a Global Effect, an Inlet Beach based organization that Craig and Carson loved and supported. Donations can be made In Memory of Craig Kruse at https://globaleffect.kindful.com/
