Clifford Pickens Obituary

Clifford Kenneth Pickens, age 80, of Crestview, Florida, passed away peacefully at his home February 3, 2025, following an illness. Born March 18, 1944, in Kirksville, Missouri, Ken lived a life defined by service, loyalty, and devotion to his friends and family. Ken was a man of quiet strength and dry wit.

He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty years, Shirley Pickens, whose unwavering partnership was the cornerstone of his life. Together they built a legacy through their children: daughter, Celena Salyers and  husband, Curt; and son, Matthew Pickens and wife, Dana. He cherished his granddaughters, Alex and Amanda Salyers, and held close the memory of his grandson, Billy Salyers, whom preceded him in death. Ken also leaves behind his brother, Pat Pickens, countless nieces, nephews, and friends whom will forever treasure his wisdom and kindness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Madge Pickens; and sisters, Sandra Adams and Karen Puls.

A proud United States Air Force veteran, Ken honorably served his country for twenty-one years as an electrician. He traveled overseas as a member of the Red Horse Squadron, where he contributed to critical infrastructure projects in Korat, Udorn, and Thailand, during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the military, he continued his commitment to public services as a safety inspector in Civil Service, ensuring the well-being of others throughout his second career.

Ken's passions reflected his meticulous nature and love for history. An accomplished long-range marksman, he spent his weekends perfecting his craft at local ranges and sharing his expertise with fellow enthusiasts. His curiosity concerning his family roots led him to become the family historian, tracing the Pickens lineage and preserving stories for future generations. He also embarked on countless road trips across America, creating memories with family and friends in every corner of the country.

A celebration of life will be held beginning at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 18, 2025 (his 81st birthday), at Davis-Watkins Crestview Memorial, 492 East Pine Avenue, Crestview, Florida 32539. The family invites guests to join them in celebrating Ken's remarkable life.

His family finds comfort knowing his legacy lives on in the stories he shared, the lives he touched, and the bullseyes he almost never missed.
