Betty Sue Owens Thompson (AKA Beautiful) passed away peacefully Thursday, January 22, 2026, at her home in Samson, Alabama at the age of 94. She was born September 20, 1931, in Samson to the late James and Bell Weeks Owens and was the youngest of thirteen children. Betty was a graduate of Samson High School, Class of 1949. In 1950, she married Carl (Tommy) Thompson and joined him in England where he was stationed in the Air Force at the time. After the military, they returned to the Owens family home in Samson. Beginning in her teens, she developed a strong work ethic which endured throughout her lifetime. Even as a teen, she raised and sold her first group of calves and used the money to become part-owner of the Top Drive-In Theater. This was just the starting point of her cattle business. For many years, she raised and sold purebred cows. Betty and Tommy were the owners of Thompson Agriculture Services for over 30 years. Being the business-minded person that she was, she never lessened her workload. Betty’s mindset was full steam ahead. She worked as a substitute rural mail carrier while helping Tommy with his crop-dusting business also. Betty was truly an amazing lady!
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Tommy Thompson and eleven siblings.
Betty is survived by one son, James Carl Thompson (Jim) and wife Terry of Montgomery, Alabama; one daughter, Elizabeth Bell Thompson (Muff) of Samson; two grandchildren, Jamie Lamar Thompson of Montgomery and Katherine Ann Thompson (Katie) of Birmingham; one brother, Hollis Owens of Jacksonville, Florida; numerous nieces and nephews; and many, many friends. Betty dearly loved and cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 31, 2026, at New Home Church beginning at 11:00 with Brother Allen Monarch and Brother Greg Roland officiating.
