Bernice Howard Obituary

Bernice Virginia Howard, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, peacefully gained her wings on July 7, 2026, in Gainesville, Florida, leaving behind a lasting legacy of faith, devotion to family, and steadfast service to her community.  Born August 8, 1946, in DeFuniak Springs, Florida, she was the cherished daughter of Rosby Sr. and Juanita Sheffield.  Bernice lived a life defined by warmth, truth, and an unparalleled capacity to love.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of over 46 years, Nathanial Howard, with whom she built a strong and enduring family foundation; her father, Rosby Sheffield Sr.; her mother, Juanita Sheffield; two brothers, David Sheffield and Jerry Sheffield; her sister, Carolyn Sheffield; and her son, Steven Clemmons.

Bernice’s beautiful spirit and legacy lives on through her devoted children: Steven (Kathlene) Clemmons kids and grandkids; Natalie (Devin) Roberts, Torrian (Rene) Howard, Brian (Tanell) Howard.  She also leaves behind a flourishing family tree, blessed with 16 grandchildren and 26 great‑grandchildren, all of whom brought her immense joy.

Bernice is survived by her loving siblings: Veronica Engram, Andrea (David) Nix, Clara (Bobby) Brasfield, Cedric (Denise) Sheffield, Barbara Dean, Danita Sheffield, Ross (Wanda) Sheffield, and Teresa (Larry) Long; sister-in-law, Salonia Sheffield; and her many beautiful nieces and nephews.

To describe Bernice as a pillar of her community would still fall short; she was, in every sense, a mother to all who crossed her path. She never met a stranger. Her radiant smile and the embrace of her comforting hugs could soften any burden and warm even the heaviest heart. The unconditional love she offered was uniquely hers—irreplaceable and impossible to replicate.

Those blessed to know her will forever remember her unwavering honesty, her gift for keeping life in proper perspective, and the joyful smile she carried with her each and every day. Her presence was a steady light, and her legacy of love will continue to shine in the lives she touched.
