James was born in Canton, Mississippi to Reverend Charles Zelton Holland and Anabelle Arledge Holland on December 14, 1937. After attending Mississippi College and the University of Tennessee Medical School, he married Sue Ann Bryant on December 28, 1961 in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Together, they raised their two daughters, Gretchen Holland Lloyd, of Boston, Massachusetts, and Susan Holland Breed, of Tallahassee, Florida. His medical practice as a Radiologist in Texas and Arkansas spanned 37 years, including eleven years at St. Bernard's Medical Center in Jonesboro, Arkansas. After his retirement in 1997, he and Sue Ann moved to Miramar Beach, Florida. James, known for his quick wit and kind and compassionate spirit, was also a veteran of the US Air Force and a member of the Community Church of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. He had a passion for music, art, boating, and travel, but most of all, for his family and numerous friends.
James was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Mary Ann Holland Anderson and Rebecca Holland Wise.
James is survived by his wife, Sue Ann, his daughters Gretchen and Susan, his seven grandchildren, Abby Adams, Katherine Lloyd, Bryant Adams, David Lloyd, Juliette Lloyd, Michael Lloyd and Chloe Breed, and his two brothers, Charles D. Holland of Sarasota, Florida and Robert E. Holland of Frisco, Texas.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 16 at 1:00 at the First Baptist Church, Jonesboro, Arkansas.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made in his name to the Chemistry Department at Mississippi College, PO Box 4005, Clinton, Mississippi, 39058. Gifts can also be made online at mc.edu/give, designating the gift to the MC Chemistry Department.
