Jacqueline Walter Obituary

Jacqueline Godbold Walter, age 90 of Mary Esther, daughter of Asa and Edna Spann Godbold of Bamberg, SC, passed peacefully from this life to the presence of her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 14.  She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Asa Godbold, Jr., her husband James W. Walter, and her son Steven Godbold Walter.  She is survived by her sister Lucille Godbold Flake and brother-in-law Major General Jackson Lee Flake, Jr. of Swansea, SC; her daughter Sylvia and husband Jack Atkins of Mary Esther; her grandchildren -- Martin Mobley and wife Jessie of Columbia, TN, Brandon Mobley and wife Stephanie of Freeport, Alexandria White and husband Aaron of Miramar Beach, and Arielle Sheldon and husband Seth of Gaithersburg, MD; and her precious great grandchildren Charlize White, Emory Sheldon, Levi White, Piper Mobley, Andy White, Atticus Mobley, Ella Mobley, and River Mobley.

Jackie met her best friend and husband of 36 years while attending school at the University of South Carolina.  Soon the couple married and moved to Atlanta where they raised their family and resided until 1984. Jackie’s keen attention to detail led to her employment as a legal secretary, credit auditor, and voucher auditor.  Shortly after Jackie and Jim retired, they relocated to Mary Esther. Soon widowed, Jacqueline became very active at Cinco Baptist Church, serving as a Single Adult Sunday School teacher for 27 years, and serving on two Pastoral Search Committees, the Personnel Committee, and the Committee on Committees.  Her excellent record-keeping skills made her a natural for taking minutes.  Additionally, she served as an officer in the local chapter of the DAR.  Her love of people made her an inviting hostess, friend, and intercessor.  She and her church friends regularly gathered on Fridays to fellowship and play Mexican Dominoes for over thirty years.

Known as Grandmama or Gran Gran, she was devoted to her family and faithfully prayed for each one by name daily. She was an eager listener and counselor, and was quick to volunteer to pray whenever the opportunity arose.  She made holidays magical, and was faithful to maintain traditions and her deep Southern roots.  As the matriarch of the family, she will be sorely missed.

The family would like to thank Dr. James Wilson, her devoted physician of 35 years, the staff at Westwood Skilled Nursing who lovingly cared for Jackie in her last nine months, Dr. Mickey Hawkins, her beloved pastor, and her treasured friends at Cinco Baptist.

Visitation will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, June 20, at Cinco Baptist Church with a celebration of life service immediately following at 10:30 AM.  A graveside prayer will be held at Beal Memorial Cemetery with a reception following at the Cinco Baptist Fellowship Hall.
