Irving “Irv” Richard Smith, age 79, of DeFuniak Springs, Florida passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at the Chautauqua Nursing Center in DeFuniak. Irving was born July 31, 1939 in Plymouth, New Hampshire to Cyrus M. And Belmira Smith. He was active in the sports programs at Ashland High School in New Hampshire and graduated in 1957. Irv, being military minded, joined the National Guard while still in high school and joined the Navy soon after graduation. Following his service time in the Navy, he joined the Army and later with the Navy Seabees. Irving bravely served his country with pride and honor, miraculously surviving five tours in Vietnam.
Irv was an avid fisherman and enjoyed hunting. He had been a resident of DeFuniak for over twenty years, developing many friendships along the way. He was well respected by his peers.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Bettina Gardner Smith.
Irving is survived by his only brother, Milan Smith of Pensacola, Florida; two nephews, Milan Smith Jr. and Matthew Smith; and one great nephew, Logan R. Smith.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 5, 2019 in the chapel of Davis-Watkins Funeral Home, 1474 Highway 83 North, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32433 beginning at 10:30 a.m. with Minister Joel Davis officiating. Committal services will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery with military honors.
