Biography

Carl Waylon Coone, age 84, of DeFuniak Springs, Florida passed away Saturday, March 6, 2010 at his residence. He was born December 31, 1925 to the late Louis and Ida Coone in Opp, Alabama.

Carl joined the United States Navy in July of 1943 and was stationed aboard USS Nevada in November of 1943 in Boston, Massachusetts and began escorting ships across the Atlantic. After three trips, he fought in the D-Day Invasion, and battles in Normandy, Cherbourg, Felon, and Masaya in South France, then returned to Norfolk, Virginia. He left aboard the USS Nevada to Honolulu, Hawaii and aboard the USS Alabama engaged in conflict with the Japanese in the Pacific, and then went into Japan on occupation force until surrender papers were signed aboard USS Missouri. Carl returned to the United States where in San Francisco, CA he decommissioned the USS Alabama, moth-balled it in Bremerton, WA, then transferred to the USS Flint-San Juan, and as a caretaker moth-balled two cruisers in Everett, Washington. He was discharged in November of 1947.

He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Cloy R. and Cecil Coone; one sister, Grace; son, Waylon Coone, and daughter, Shirley (Dianne) Coone Ferrell.

Carl is survived by two brothers, Charlie Coone and wife Macie and Horse Clem Coone and wife Janet; special nephew and niece Donnie and Pam Coone and great-niece, Christa “Pumpkin” Coone; one son, Charles DeWanne Coone; six granddaughters, Tammy Davis, Kathy Harbuck, Traci Harbuck, Brittany Coone, Chelse Coone, and Destiny Coone; eight great-grandchildren, eight great great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A time of visitation will be held Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at Davis-Watkins Funeral Home, 1474 Highway 83 North, DeFuniak Springs, Florida 32433, from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 11, 2010 in the chapel of Davis-Watkins Funeral Home beginning at 2 p.m. with Brother Joel Davis officiating. Military honors will be provided by the United States Navy. Flowers are being accepted.
