John Carlton Hofer

March 26, 1928 - September 26, 2009

John C. Hofer, age 81, a longtime resident of Destin and Fort Walton Beach
(Florida) died Saturday, September 26th, 2009.

He was born March 26, 1928, near Aledo (Illinois) and was the son of Elmer and Marna McLaughlin Hofer. He graduated from Aledo High School in 1946, was an Honors graduate of the University of Illinois and also earned an MS degree from the University of Illinois. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He is survived by his wife Paula L. Hofer of Fort Walton Beach and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Schmatz of Amherst (Wisconsin). Four children survive; Mrs. Beth Stephens of Aledo (Illinois), Jeffrey Schmatz of McAllen (Texas), Jon Hofer of Farmington (Connecticut) and Mark Hofer of Cedar Park (Texas).
Grandchildren include; Jennifer Kuntzman of Peoria (Illinois), Matthew, Chris and Jaron Wilkin of Springfield (Illinois), Sarah Wilkin of Aledo (Illinois), Ross, Sydney and Courtney Hofer of Farmington (Connecticut), Zachary and Cody Hofer of Cedar Park (Texas) and Jeremy Schmatz of McAllen (Texas). He is also survived by six great-grandchildren.

He was a career marketing and management consultant and became a Certified Management Consultant. Prior residences included Lake Forest (Illinois), Lansing (Michigan), Champaign (Illinois) and Park Forest (Illinois).

He was an active layman at St. Simon's on the Sound Episcopal Church, Fort Walton Beach. He served on the Destin Harbor and Waterways Board. Other recent community interests included the Fort Walton Sail and Power Squadron, volunteering at Henderson Beach State Park and Friends of Emerald Coast State Parks.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00pm on Wednesday, September 30th at St. Simons on the Sound Episcopal Church in Fort Walton Beach. A reception will follow at the church. Internment of ashes will be at the St. Simon's columbarium.
